In the context of the extraction of oil in Azerbaijan, which was even mentioned in the early accounts of travelers Marco Polo and Evliya Chelebi, Baku has consistently been a site for testing innovative steps in this field throughout various periods. Going through different stages – sometimes contributing to the prosperity of the people and at the same time attracting attention of leading powers – Azerbaijan's oil history was definitively concluded with the "Contract of the Century" signed by Heydar Aliyev.
